My have those words come back to haunt me over the years. One incident in particular being last night. When Milo travels on Thursday nights (which isn't that often), I am the sole transporter of children. With Kennedy just starting middle school basketball, she needs to be picked up at 5:15. Madison has a dance class on Thursday nights from 4:30 - 5:30 and wouldn't you know, each location is in the complete opposite direction. Add in a little after-work traffic and winter driving conditions and that is a case for a lot of VAN time.
So with Madison dropped off at dance at 4:30, I scurry home for a quick 1/2 hour to wrap up some last few things for the day. I leave the house at 5:05 to pick up Kennedy, who called while in route. 'WHERE ARE YOU?' I was 2 minutes late arriving to her destination. You know I should learn not to always be ON TIME, then they would expect such promptness. Kennedy gets in the car with shorts and a T-shirt on.
Mom: 'Where is your coat and have you thought about packing a pair of sweat pants to slip on after practice?'
Kennedy: 'YES..M..O..T..H..E..R'.
So off to the other side of town to fetch Madison, which at this point I am now close to 10 minutes late picking her up. We pull up and out bounds Madison, you guessed it in shorts and a t-shirt.
Mom: 'Madison, why are you caring your coat?'
Madison: 'Because, mom it only takes 5 seconds to get to the car. I counted.'
Trust me, they do own complete winter gear. Coats, boots, hat, mittens, scarfs and may I add multiples of each in case one may lose any piece of the ensemble.
So en route to home we go, to arrive exactly 55 minutes later at 6:00 PM. We hustled inside knowing we are having daddio's left over spaghetti. The girls head up for showers as I get supper ready and we then convene back in the kitchen 20 minutes later.
Please note that ONLY Thursday nights are like this. Milo and I have strongly felt that until the girls reach middle school, any extra curricular activities are limited to may be one thing during the school year, making sure that that one thing is wrapped up by 6:00 and only one night a week. We treasure our family time in the evening and value wanting to have supper together, giving the girls some much needed down time.
Life for them will get busy enough before they know it.
I lived 2 1/2 miles out of town on a farm growing up. I can't tell you the number of times my mom shuttled me back and forth to this practice and that game. Or the times she was a bit late picking me up and got an earful because I had to wait! So for all those trips, mom...THANK YOU and for all those times I was a self-focused, not realizing that you had 3 other siblings to care for, was working full-time, AND managing a home.....SORRY!
What goes around, always comes around!
Well we have an exciting weekend coming up. I have a large open house event tomorrow from 10 - 2. If you are in the Cedar Rapids area come on down, I am joining forces with multiple other vendors, lots of shopping opportunities and good food!
It is at the NEW REVEAL Studio at 5340 North Park Place Ste 112
Madison has her 'girl-friend' birthday party on Saturday night. I am guessing I will be making a trip to the mall on Sunday for her to spend any gift cards she may receive. AND I am hoping to catch 'Twilight' this weekend, as I just finished the book last night and can't wait to start 'New Moon'.
Stay warm!
Jill
